Interesting experience at the local Vomar store
My Dutch is limited, I understand a bit, but I find it hard to express myself, especially when it comes to complicated sentences. While waiting for the cashier to finish scanning my items, I noticed that she scanned one item twice. I politely told her in English: "I'm sorry but I believe you made a mistake and scanned it twice." She responded in Dutch. I didn't quite get what she said, so I asked her if it's possible to speak slowly or to speak in English instead, so I can understand. I know she speaks perfect English because I have been shopping there for over 2 years, and she is always there. The conversation continued as such:
**The Cashier** \- I am tired of having to speak in English all the time.
**Me** \- I am sorry, but I only pointed out that you made a mistake, and I am unable to say that in Dutch, therefore I spoke in English.
**The Cashier** \- Learn Dutch. When I go to Germany I speak German, not Dutch not English. You come to buy things to a Dutch supermarket you learn Dutch.
**Me** \- Is this the policy of Vomar? Dutch-speakers only?
**The Cashier** \- 50% of the time I have to speak English because of people like you.
**Me** \- I am only pointing out that you made a mistake while scanning my groceries. There is no need to go this far. If you are unhappy with the job probably you should talk to your manager.
The person waiting in line after me joins the conversation:
**Third person** \- You know she is right. Have more respect for this country.
**Me** \- I am paying all my taxes, in time, without any benefits in return. I am following the law, better than Dutch sometimes. I am trying my best to respect the local culture, although sometimes is bizarre to me. How did you come to the conclusion that I am disrespectful to the Netherlands?
**Third person** \- We don't need people like you here who are not making the smallest effort to learn Dutch but exploit this country with arrogance. You want to live here you learn Dutch, if you want to speak in English go to America.
I left ashamed of pointing out an obvious mistake in my bill. Duolingo, here we go again, for the 10th time.
