A blend of several words like Kabine, Kabüse, Baracke and French cahute (“hut, shack”), cabane (“hut, shack”), from Late Latin capanna, cabanna, of obscure substrate origin, or compare caupōna (“inn”) from caupō (“innkeeper”), also of doubtful origin. The sense “pub” developed in Russian каба́к (kabák), which together with Ukrainian каба́к (kabák) and Polish kabak has passed from the Prussian dialects, such as Low German Kabacke (“hut, hovel”).
